In order to maximise the discovery, consumption and exchange of data that have spatial components, the MOD recognises the value of a Service Orientated Approach (SOA). To establish, govern and maintain geospatial data services requires a number of enabling technical and institutional components. This 10 month project focused on a subsection of these enabling components, the development of geospatial profiles, test data and best practice guides. The work contributes to the wider System of Systems Approach (SOSA) developed by Engineering Group in DE&S supported by Team ENSURE.
Helyx successfully developed profiles to support the consistent use standards and investigated the use of validation tools to test their implementation. Helyx developed a number of best practice guides which provide advice and guidance on the requirements for geospatial information standards. A final strand of the work involved Helyx reviewing the UK MOD geospatial metadata profile which is essential in the promoting interoperability and the exchange of data.
The resulting work has been incorporated into Joint Service Publications and forms part of the SOSA Rule Book available to delivery teams within DE&S. Enhanced geospatial capability has the potential to aid decision making over many domains. The work has benefited MOD geospatial information and intelligence providers, capability and policy areas and Delivery Teams.
Follow-on tasks have resulted and we have worked to support the implementation of the MOD Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI).
