Understanding the production, dissemination and exploitation of urban 3D models.

This task is one of ten currently under contract via Team GEOCORE (a consortium comprised from industry and academia) as part of the Advanced Geospatial Information Systems (AGIS) programme for the UK Ministry of Defence. Helyx is part of Team GEOCORE and has carried out a successful multi-year research project liaising with many facets of the Geo community within UK Defence.

The utilisation of 3D models is set to increase, particularly for operations within the urban and contingency environment. Through this work Helyx has investigated the current capability and explored how it could be improved in the future.

The research concentrated on four strands:

1. The creation of a baseline set of urban 3D requirements used to better understand the breadth of 3D use now and in the future.

2. An investigation to understand the data, processes and applications currently in use by UK Defence.

3. A demonstration of the integration of industry technologies that could be used by UK Defence to augment its current portfolio.

4. An investigation into suitable 3D standards and transfer mechanisms to improve the dissemination of 3D models.

The work has provided a clear understanding of the urban 3D situation within UK Defence. It created an innovative concept architecture which provides an initial vision for how urban 3D models could be provisioned in the future. It has developed of an overarching workflow and methodology for producing 3D models to allow a deeper understanding of the resources (time, human resources, data and technology) required to generate 3D models. It has also identified appropriate standards and mechanisms for the exchange of 3D data.
