Award winning MODAF expertise

Use case modelling is at the core of our requirements capture process; we are experts in the use of the Unified Modelling Language within the MOD Architectural Framework (MODAF) and were joint 2007 winners of the MOD Integration Authority MODAF Challenge.

Our analysts can produce requirements in the modelling language of the client. Our current experience covered toolsets such as ISSE™, Rational Rose™, Mood™, and we have an extensive grounding in the use of DOORS™. A trusted partner for MOD Research

Defence research is a core activity at Helyx. We have acted as the Technical Authority for a number of years for a major MOD Research Programme under the direction of our DSTL and DEC customers, researching in the fields of Information Systems (IS) and Network Enabled Capability (NEC).

We have amassed considerable experience over the years of our primary clients and have a deep understanding of their business processes, drivers and constraints, but also where the future will be taking them, all of which help to inform and direct our research activities.

In parallel we maintain a wide overview of technology. Our analytical team is composed of staff highly experienced in MOD research, including many with PhDs and higher degrees, but to bring balance and a wider perspective from outside defence, we recruit the best in field from the financial sector, local government and technology houses. In addition, we have a long track record of bringing former end users into our team to focus the relevance of our outputs.

Our research activities are broad and varied and include:

  • Information Management (IM)
  • Information Exploitation (IX)
  • Shared Situational Awareness (SSA)
  • NEC in Operational and Tactical domains
  • Decision and Mission Support capabilities
  • Strategy and Policy Support, for both IM/IX and NEC activities.

We are experienced in the use advanced concept demonstrators to support requirements elicitation, and have successfully produced demonstrators both in-house and in partnership with industry.

Outside of our core MOD Research Programme  we support a range of other activities, including:

  • Wider Applied Research – we are regarded as experts on the end user business process and technology areas such as IM/IX; and are often asked to brief other research areas
  • NITEWorks – we have provided specialist technical and project management staff into NITEWorks to direct “question” areas
  • Discrete work for Command elements within the MOD – we are frequently asked to pull through the longer-term thinking within the Research Programme and apply the concepts to the more immediate problems of our defence customer base.

We are specialists in the creative thinking required to understand and articulate the benefits of technology to our customers. We understand our customers, their needs and their language. We strive to use our customers’ language to describe even the most advanced or forward thinking of concepts. This attention to detail and consistent high quality of output, coupled with the professional, yet relaxed Helyx approach has ensured that we have remained the partner of choice for the MOD.
